Homes

It seems that everyone is buying homes these days. Matt just moved into his new one, and 3 various family members (four if you don’t count couples) purchased homes (2 for the first time). Perhaps we’re trendsetters.

Dad (Mr. Brier) came to town to hone his home improvement skills and “take a vacation”. We’ve been contemplating the idea of brining him over to Matt’s century old house and see what sort of brainstorm could occur when the minds meet.

I (David) was out cruising around on Friday and decided to leisurely ride through the alley of the old Skelton house on Arlington. I saw former neighbors Carol and Scott leaving their back door to go do some errands or something. Remembering how maliciously ‘anti-fun’ these paranoid parents were back when I was a pre-teen (they wouldn’t help me and Justin get the childproof cap off of the lighter fluid), I decided to take a second run through the alley so as to vengefully give them the impression that I was casing their house in order to burgle it. I didn’t stick around long enough to judge my success by the reaction on their faces because I was distracted by a car pulling into the family’s old driveway. So I biked down the alley a third time and chatted with the owner of the house for a while. She seemed like the type who enjoys talking, and she went into great detail about the changes that have been made over the last 14 years. Most of the more devastating changes she wasn’t responsible for. I think that the only thing she did that a family member would scoff at was remove the back porch. I suspect that my brother would be the only one to hold that against her, and that would simply be because he spent so much time helping to build the thing.

After I told the owner “I should get going” a few times, she finally let me go. But she invited me to stop back again sometime; potentially for a tour. Perhaps Dad, Heather, and I can set a day aside and call it our own miniature parade of turn-of-the-century-east-side homes.

Sports for Athiests

After arriving at mom's to watch NASCAR on her cable TV, we were greeted by the TNT/NBC announcers with rain pouring down around their shelter. Now I (Heather) could easily go off on a rant about how inept and downright stupid the TNT/NBC announcers are compared with the talent and entertainment value of the FX/FOX announcers, but that's not the point of this blog. The wet track meant that yet again, there would be another rain delay.

To kill some time, mom suggested we try a bar on 38th and Hiawatha called the Red Cardinal. She mentioned that they cook a mean medium rare burger and I was sold. David and I headed out to the bar. Supposedly it is a pretty popular place. However, when we walked in, we discovered that we had our pick of any seat in the bar except for one table and about three bar stools. We checked the TV sets to see if any had on NASCAR. Surely they must have at least one TV on TNT since they had a few NASCAR posters decorating the grey walls. No luck.

So we sat down near the bar. Within a few minutes, one of the regulars went up to the TV and started changing channels. Surely, he had to be looking for TNT. He asked the bartender which channel was TNT. Not patient enough to wait for the bartender to look it up, nor for the man to press the channel button over and over, I yelled out, "try 36." Just then, they announced that drivers were asked to get in their cars. The race would be starting soon.

A waitress came by to get our order. Suddenly, she became very distracted by the usual goings-on of a NASCAR race. They were all bowing their heads in prayer. She asked, "Prayer?!? Don't they have any sporting events for athiests?" David and I were pleasantly amused by her question. I would have to say that the prayer and the fact that 99.9% of the audience are promilitary Bush backers leads me to have no desire to ever go see one of these races live.

Nevertheless, fans we are. So until someone buys the baseball season off of FOX (thus allotting for more NASCAR time), we will continue to seek out the second half of the racing season wherever we can find it, regardless of the spiritual or political preferences that surround us.

“Found!”

(the precursor to “Owned!”)

Yet another instrument may soon be added to our collection. Through a long string of Heather’s relatives, we will some day be receiving a harmonium (<-- windows media or real player). We’re looking forward to it. I (David) will now no longer miss the Melodica which has to be retuned to my brother before he permanently leaves for Oregon. –And just as a related reminder, for those who would like to see the last Second Hand Ska Kings performance in which my brother’s Melodica get played, then make sure you stop by the Red Sea Saturday evening.—
